How Nervous System Dysregulation Affects Digestion

Written by The Rē Editorial Team | May 20, 2024 5:00:00 AM

A chronically activated stress response can lead to a dysregulated nervous system. In a dysregulated state, digestion can be affected in the following ways.

  • Slowed gut motility: Food passes more slowly through the digestive tract which can lead to bloating and constipation.
  • Increased intestinal permeability: Undigested food particles pass into the bloodstream  which can lead to an inflammatory response and even autoimmune conditions.
  • Reduced digestive enzyme production: Resulting in bloating and incomplete digestion and absorption of nutrients.
  • Microbiome Imbalance: Slow transit of food and inflammation can affect the gut microbiome negatively which can also affect neurotransmitter production and mood.
  • IBS Flare-ups: stomach cramps, spasms, bloating and difficult bowel movements.
  • Stomach Acid Dysregulation: Impaired digestion, absorption, potentially acid reflux.

Impaired digestion is one of many symptoms of a dysregulated nervous system. Other common symptoms include sleep issues, hormonal imbalance, anxiety, depression and brain fog. We created our 5 and 10 day Rēset programs to be able to provide education and immersive experiences to better understand the nervous system and to create more coherence between brain and body.
